I grew up in the 80s fascinated by what could be the most popular icon of Japanese pop culture. So, yes, like most kids my age during those days, I spent my afternoons watching Bioman and Lazerion (I don't think an explanation is necessary, since you may be too young to know who or what they are anyway). Come to think of it, Tokyo and Manila have always maintained close cultural ties even if eager Japanese language learners among us remain to be a rare breed. Just look at the hundreds of Filipino women who are still lured to the red lights districts of major Japanese cities, years after the employment restriction on entertainers. No, this blog is not about learning a foreign language or about being mesmerized by a foreign culture. Rather, it is an examination of our ethos as Filipinos, in the context of our ties with an Asian economic power, which has been so generous to teach us their ways through cultural exchange that somehow we missed the lesson.
